Termed Clitoria ternatea in English, this plant is revered as a holy flower in India. They are especially used in daily prayers. The Aparajita plant is a vigorous, creeping legume plant, and the base of the plant may be five metre long. This is a protein-rich plant that can be grown at a relatively low cost. The Aparajita plant is valued as a pasture legume as livestock prefer it over other plants. It is a nitrogen-fixing legume plant and a cover crop in coconut and rubber plantations. The plant grows fast during the summer months and survives better in 19-28 degrees Celsius weather, where annual rainfall ranges from 700mm to 1500mm.

Fruit/Berries The fruits are flat pods with six to ten seeds in each pod. The fruits are edible when tender.

This plant may have originated in Latin America or Asia but is now naturalised in semi-arid and sub-humid tropics of Asia, Africa, and Australia. The Aparajita plant is found in grassland, bush, open woodland, vegetation, and disturbed areas. It grows at an altitude of 1600-1800m. The plant has a low tolerance for flooding or waterlogging. The plant can grow in various soils, but shallow, heavy clay, and sodic soils suit best.
